Monstera deliciosa

Swiss cheese plant

Feel the top 3-5 cm of soil. If it is dry, water thoroughly and let excess water drain away. Check the soil rather than watering on a fixed day.

Growth often slows in a South African winter, so the soil may take longer to dry.

My Monstera has a yellow leaf. Am I doing something wrong?

One yellow leaf doesn't always mean trouble. Let's look for clues before changing your routine.

  • Check the soil first. If it is still wet a few centimetres down, wait before watering again and check that the pot drains freely.
  • Notice which leaves. An occasional older, lower leaf can yellow naturally. Several yellow leaves at once deserve a closer look.
  • Look at the light. Bright, indirect light is a good starting point for a Monstera. Avoid moving it suddenly into harsh sun.

Is it just one older leaf, or are newer leaves yellowing too?
